Taverne Johann introduces new management
23.04.2026 - Taverne Johann is strategically positioning itself for the future: Nicola Seematter and Tabea Mahrer, a well-established and experienced duo, are taking over the management of the renowned restaurant. Both have been shaping the restaurant for years and stand for continuity, quality, and self-driven growth.
The reorientation is part of an internal transition: Current head chef Christoph Hartmann will assume overall responsibility for the kitchen at the Teufelhof Basel starting in July 2026.
Nicola Seematter has been part of Taverne Johann since its founding and, together with Christoph Hartmann, has shaped the restaurant’s culinary signature. The 13-point rating in GaultMillau bears his distinct mark and stands for precise craftsmanship and consistent excellence.
Tabea Mahrer brings extensive experience in the restaurant industry, including from her role as co-manager at Ufer7. At Taverne Johann, she will be responsible for operational management and will shape the restaurant with her keen sense for guests, atmosphere, and team.
Together, Seematter and Mahrer lead an establishment with a distinct identity: modern, ingredient-driven cuisine and open, personal hospitality. Taverne Johann remains firmly rooted in St. Johann, Basel, and remains an important gathering place in the neighborhood. Operations will continue as usual.
